In collaboration with OneUp, a literacy foundation based in New Delhi, Teachers College Advancing Literacy is excited to host its second institute in India! The institute will draw participants from across India and the region, and will build on thirty years of expertise in the teaching of writing at Teachers College. Writing changes as the world changes. The writing people engage with today is vastly different from the writing people engaged in long ago. At this three-day institute, teachers will learn the most important pedagogies for teaching the writers of today, with a special focus on writing process, on conferring, and on mentor texts. This writing institute will take a deep dive into the genres that dominate the current educational landscape and grab the hearts and minds of children - journalism, research-based informational, opinion and argument writing and graphic novels. Participants will study the structure, elaboration techniques and craft of these genres in order to develop coherent, explicit whole class and small group lessons. Oral rehearsal, multimodal writing and writing conventions will be embedded throughout to ensure that students can make their voices heard using different platforms. Across the days, participants will engage in both grade-specific and cross-grade level discussions and activities around academic writing in order to bridge theory and practice into their own educational contexts. Participants will also explore ways to harness AI and bring it into their writing classrooms both for themselves and for their students. Participants will think through how best practices in writing intersect with the key components of their curricula (including IB, IGSCE, CBSE and ICSE) to provide students with real-world, purposeful writing experiences. This institute is recommended for both newer and experienced writing teachers.
